The Upazila Administration and Fisheries Department conducted a drive in Baghia Beel, Tungipara, Gopalganj and seized 49 China Duari Nets. The length of the seized nets is about 1,250 meters. The market value is about 2 lakh 20 thousand taka. The nets were later burned and destroyed.
The drive was conducted on Wednesday in Baghia Beel, Patgati Union. The drive was led by UNO Mohammad Didarul Alam. Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Debashish Bachar and police members were also present.
According to Fisheries Department sources, the mesh of the China Duari Net is very small. As a result, along with fish, fry, small fish and various aquatic animals are also trapped in this net. This hinders the reproduction and spread of native fish and damages aquatic biodiversity.
The nets were seized from different parts of the beel during the operation. Later, they were burned and destroyed on the spot.
Local residents said that the number of native fish in the beel is decreasing due to the catch of fry and small fish in banned nets.
