The Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University (BOU), Prof Dr. Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan, has said, “The July Mass Uprising stands as a historic milestone in Bangladesh’s struggle for democracy, justice, and human dignity. The core spirit of this movement was the establishment of a discrimination-free, democratic, and accountable state.”

He made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion titled “The July Mass Uprising and the Commitment to a New Bangladesh”, organized to mark the second anniversary of the July Mass Uprising.

The event was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Central Conference Centre of Bangladesh Open University in Gazipur.

The discussion was chaired by Prof Dr. Md. Sirajul Islam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Admin), and moderated by Acting Registrar T.M. Ahmed Hossain. Special guests included Professor Dr. Anisur Rahman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), and Prof Dr. Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, Treasurer of the university.

The keynote speaker, Prof Md. Lutfor Rahman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the National University, said that the July 2024 student-led mass uprising was not a spontaneous event but rather the outcome of years of accumulated public frustration over oppression, deprivation and authoritarian rule.

Among the speakers at the discussion were Prof Tanvir Ahsan, Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages; Prof Dr. Md. Abu Taleb of the School of Agriculture and Rural Development; Mohammad Ali, Director of the Publications, Printing and Distribution Division; and Modachchhir Hossain, a law student of BOU and a July fighter.
