'Even after the divorce, fear is not going away from our lives. I want to live safely with my two children. But due to threats and intimidation from my ex-husband and his associates, I am constantly living in insecurity.' Mitu Sharmin, a resident of Barguna's Patharghata upazila, expressed her helplessness in this way in a tearful voice.
He read out a written statement at a press conference held at the Barguna Press Club auditorium at 7:30 pm on Sunday (August 2). His younger sister Mahima Akhtar was present with him. His mother, aunt and two children were also present.
In her written statement, Mitu Sharmin alleged that her ex-husband Rafiqul Islam and his brother had tortured her physically and mentally for a long time. She also claimed that several false cases were filed against her out of anger after the divorce.
He further alleged that there has been a dispute over the nearly 250 acres of land he bought in the name of his two sons with the money he saved from the maintenance money during his marriage. He also alleged that attempts have been made to socially humiliate him and his family by distorting his personal photos and spreading them on social media.
Mitu Sharmin claims that her ex-husband and his associates recently attempted to attack her in front of Patharghata police station. Later, with the help of local people and the police, the situation was brought under control and she and her sister sought medical treatment.
"I want to live safely with my two children," he said at the press conference. "I request the administration to ensure the safety of me and my family, conduct a fair investigation into the allegations, and take legal action against the culprits."
However, it was not possible to get the statement of the accused Rafiqul Islam or his family on this matter. If their statement is received, it will be published later.
