‎Locals have formed a human chain demanding the immediate construction of sustainable embankments to prevent river erosion in the approximately four-kilometer area of Mongla Ghashiakhali Channel from Romjaipur to Urabunia in Perikhali Union of Rampal Upazila of Bagerhat and compensation for those affected by river erosion.

‎On Sunday morning, the human chain was held on the banks of Ghosiya Khali in Purbapara, Romjaipur at the initiative of the residents of Romjaipur. More than three hundred men and women affected by river erosion participated in it. At that time, they were seen holding placards with various inscriptions such as 'I want sustainable embankment now', 'I am getting a ferry in exchange for my life, we want sustainable embankment', 'Sell me, but give me a dam'.

‎Speakers at the human chain said that the people of Romjaipur and the surrounding areas have been suffering greatly due to river erosion for a long time. Many houses, croplands, roads and various structures have already disappeared into the riverbed. The disruption of communication due to erosion is also having a negative impact on education, healthcare and business.

‎Local residents complained that erosion is increasing due to the strong current of the river and the waves of shipping. They also claimed that the situation has been complicated due to unplanned work in the name of river dredging. Accidents are also happening while moving along the broken roads.

‎The human chain members also said that it is not enough to just build embankments, the government should provide proper compensation to those who have lost their houses, land and assets due to river erosion.
