A sudden storm has destroyed hundreds of houses in Votmari Union of Kaliganj Upazila in Lalmonirhat. As the houses were damaged, many families are now staying under the open sky. During the storm, three people were injured by the impact of tin sheets and bricks.
On Sunday at 8 a.m., amid continuous rainfall over the past few days, a sudden cyclone struck the Srutidhar area of Ward No. 8 under the union, damaging semi-pucca buildings and tin houses. Bricks and tin pieces from the buildings hit three people — Badsha Mia (40), Mamud Mia (70), and Shahidul Islam (46) — leaving them injured. They have been admitted to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex.
Eyewitness Md. Shahinur Rahman said that during moderate rain, the sudden storm destroyed tin-shed houses, semi-pucca buildings, and warehouses. He added that the storm lasted for a short time; otherwise, the number of affected families could have been several times higher.
Votmari Union Parishad Chairman Md. Forhad Hossain said that in Madhya Srutidhar and Char Nohali villages, at least 100 houses belonging to 50 families were completely damaged.
Kaliganj UNO Mosammat Jakia Khatun said, she received news of the destruction and had already sent an investigation team to the spot. She also visited the area herself and told reporters that 112 families’ houses had been damaged in the sudden cyclone. In the afternoon, 30 kg of rice was distributed to each affected family, and further government assistance will be provided later, she added.
