Youth arrested on charge.of extortion in Mirzaganj

RAB-8 has arrested a young man named Niaz Morshed Pavel (26) on charges of extortion in Mirzaganj, Patuakhali. He has multiple drug cases including extortion against him at the police station. He was arrested on Saturday evening from in front of the “Bellal Tea and Fresh Juice” shop under Barishal Kotwali Model Police Station.
The arrested Niaz Morshed Pavel is the son of the late Anisur Rahman of Purba Subidkhali village in Mirzaganj upazila of Patuakhali. He has been involved in various criminal activities including terrorism, extortion and drug trafficking in the area for a long time.
Squadron Leader Rashed Ahsan, company commander of RAB-8, CPC-1 Patuakhali Camp, confirmed the matter.
According to RAB sources, Abul Bashar alias Abu Bepari is a businessman established in Subidkhali Bazar, Mirzaganj. His son's name is Abdullah Al Abid. He is a 2nd year LLB student at the Canadian University of Bangladesh. He sometimes comes home to look after his father's business. On September 20, Niaz Morshed Pavel and his associates came to Abid's shop and demanded a ransom of 10 lakh taka. When Abid refused to pay the money, on the afternoon of September 27, they went to Abid's house and demanded the ransom again. During this time, they threatened him with a knife and forcibly took 1 lakh taka and broke the drawer of the showcase and took away a gold chain weighing 6 annas.
Later, the victim's aunt Jahanara Begum filed an extortion case with Mirzaganj Police Station, naming five people as accused. Three to four more people have been named as unidentified accused in the case.
Later, based on a secret information, on Saturday (October 4) at around 6 pm, a joint operation by RAB-8, CPC-1 Patuakhali Camp and RAB-8 Sadar Battalion led by Squadron Leader Rashed and the team led by him arrested Niaz Morshed Pavel from in front of the "Bellal Tea and Fresh Juice" shop under Barisal Kotwali Model Police Station.
Mirzaganj Police Station OC Md. Nazrul Islam said, Niaz Morshed Pavel has multiple drug cases, including extortion, at the police station. He was sent to Patuakhali Jail by the Mirzaganj Upazila Senior Judicial Magistrate Court on Sunday afternoon.
