Workshop held in Noakhali to promote gender-sensitive journalism

A two-day training workshop focused on building gender-sensitive journalism and reinforcing the media's role in preventing child marriage concluded at the Maijdi Nice Guest House in Noakhali on Tuesday.
Organized under the 'Accelerating Action to End Child Marriage' project—a joint initiative by UNFPA and ActionAid Bangladesh, supported by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and partnered with Sagarika Samaj Unnayan Sangstha—the workshop brought together 32 journalists from print and electronic media across Noakhali's nine upazilas.
Addressing the event as chief guest, Kamrunnahar, Deputy Director of the Noakhali Department of Women's Affairs, highlighted the media's role as the "eyes of society" in shaping public perception and combating gender-based violence.
Panelists, including ActionAid Program Officer Shanta Islam, Sagarika Executive Director Md. Saiful Islam, and UNFPA Officer Asma Akhter, stressed objective journalism's ability to drive policy action and counter harmful social norms.
The sessions focused on the health risks of early marriage, maternal healthcare awareness, gender disparities, and ethical portrayals of women and girls in the media.
