Security beefed up in Patharghata ; 5 AL supporters arrested in special operation

The administration has tightened security measures to maintain law and order in Patharghata upazila of Barguna on August 5. In a special operation conducted to avert possible untoward situation, Patharghata police have arrested five people known to be associated with the Awami League and its affiliate organizations.
A case has been registered against the detainees under the Anti-Terrorism Act and sent to court, police said.
According to police and local sources, a rally was held under the banner of the banned Chhatra League in Satkar area of Raihanpur union of the upazila around 10 am on August 3. Locals claim that some of the participants left the area in an ambulance after the rally. However, no official comment was received from the police in this regard.
After the rally incident, the police conducted a drive and arrested five people. They are Barguna District Matsya League President Md. Jahangir Jomaddar (68), Barguna District Krishak League Publicity and Publication Secretary Md. Masum Billah (46), Russell (31), Chhatra League activist Md. Sabuj Akon (20) and Awami League active member Md. Sujan Akon (32).
Meanwhile, police patrols and surveillance have been increased on important roads, markets, and public gathering places in Patharghata around August 5. The administration is also closely monitoring various political activities.
Patharghata Police Station OC Abdul Alim said, "A rally of the banned Chhatra League was held in the Raihanpur area on August 3. A special operation has been conducted to prevent possible sabotage and unpleasant incidents ahead of August 5. Five people have been arrested in the operation.
