Train crisis on Chattogram-Cox's Bazar route: New hope with proposal for regular services
Md. Tanzim Hossain, Chattogram
The Eastern Railway Zone has proposed making the ‘Cox’s Bazar Special’ train a regular service on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar route. The proposal seeks approval to increase the train’s daily trips from two to four.
According to railway officials, the additional trips can be managed with the existing workforce and logistics. This initiative is expected to meet the longstanding demand of passengers while boosting revenue. As per the proposal, the train would depart Chattogram at 6:30 AM and 2:45 PM, while departing Cox’s Bazar at 10:20 AM and 7:00 PM.
Since the inauguration of the Dohazari-Cox's Bazar rail line, the number of trains on this route has been highly inadequate compared to demand. Currently, the two trains operating on the Dhaka-Cox's Bazar route can only accommodate 115 passengers each. As a result, obtaining tickets for direct travel between Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar has become increasingly difficult.
Local residents have pointed out that non-stop train services prevent the people of South Chattogram from reaping the benefits. They believe that regularizing the ‘Cox’s Bazar Special’ will significantly alleviate their travel challenges.
Stakeholders are optimistic that implementing this proposal will enhance passenger services and ensure increased revenue for the railway sector.
