Traditional Gambhira revived to address climate crisis: YOUReach uses folk performance to raise climate awareness in Rajshahi

In an innovative effort to highlight the worsening effects of climate change in the region, YOUReach (Youth in Research and Action for Social Change) organized a traditional Gambhira performance at the Muktomoncho (open stage) in Rajshahi on Friday afternoon.
For the first time in Rajshahi, the age-old cultural form of Gambhira—a satirical and musical folk performance rooted in the region’s heritage—was used to spread messages about climate awareness. Through songs and a short drama, performers portrayed the hardships of people enduring intense heat, prolonged drought, and water scarcity driven by changing weather patterns.
Based on a real incident from 2022, the drama told the tragic story of a farmer who took his own life after losing his crops to drought and falling into debt.
Zahid Hasan Zoha, who played the role of ‘Nana,’ said, “Gambhira is part of Rajshahi’s heritage. We used it to reflect the climate-induced challenges people are enduring.”
Actress Suprava Binte Rafique, who portrayed the farmer’s wife, added,
“Many farmers are suffering due to prolonged droughts, yet there are no effective steps in water or agricultural management. Without action, the situation will worsen.”
Mehedi Hasan Hridoy, founder of YOUReach, said, “Rising temperatures, depleting groundwater, and recurring droughts have made Rajshahi’s climate situation alarming. Through this initiative, we hope to raise awareness and draw policymakers’ attention.”
Over a hundred spectators attended the event, lauding the initiative for blending cultural heritage with environmental advocacy.
Founded by students of the University of Rajshahi, YOUReach is a youth-led organization promoting research-based social change.
