DUCSU demands justice for Hasina, military, police officials those who ordered disappearances, murders

DU Correspondent

Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) in a press release said,  the darkest period in the history of Bangladesh was the previous Awami fascist regime.

During that time, state-sponsored disappearances, murders, torture, false cases and extrajudicial killings created a terrible humanitarian disaster. According to the report of the Disappearance Commission, more than 1800 complaints of disappearances have already been filed. The victims ranged from ordinary citizens, students, women, working people to leaders and activists of various political parties opposing Awami fascism. Even children were not spared from this atrocity.

The press release firther said, In particular, numerous students from various universities and educational institutions in the country have been victims of these disappearances and murders. Many of them have been detained, tortured and disappeared due to their political dissent. Many students and student leaders are still missing. We do not know what happened to them.

The report of the Commission on Disappearances further raises the alarming issue of the direct and indirect involvement of a neighboring country in the disappearances, murders and crimes against humanity. This issue poses a profound threat to the national security and sovereignty of Bangladesh.

These disappearances, murders and crimes against humanity are not only the responsibility of the dictator Sheikh Hasina and her political circle. Rather, high-ranking officials of several law enforcement agencies and organizations, including the Directorate General of Defense Intelligence (DGFI), RAB, were directly involved. The inhuman torture carried out in secret detention centers including the "Mirror House" is shameful and condemnable in a civilized society. The forcible disappearance of numerous citizens due to political dissent, framing them in false cases and promoting them as 'militants' was a planned strategy of state terrorism.

The International Crimes Tribunal recently issued arrest warrants for 28 people, including Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and the former DGFI chief, on charges of enforced disappearance, secret detention, and torture. The move has brought some hope to the long-standing pain and suffering of enforced disappearances and state repression. But it is not enough.

Sheikh Hasina and all members of her fascist administration who ordered the disappearances, murders and human rights violations must be brought to justice quickly. The officials of the relevant military and law enforcement agencies, including DGFI, RAB, who are directly or indirectly involved in these crimes must also be brought to justice. The investigation of the disappearances commission must be conducted in a transparent, impartial and international manner so that the victim families get justice. The student community will be vocal against any conspiracy to give 'safe exit' or immunity to the identified criminals.

Unless true justice is established in the country, none of the state's law enforcement agencies, including the army, RAB, and police, will regain the trust of the people. Prosecuting criminals will not tarnish the reputation of all law enforcement agencies, including the army, RAB, and police, but rather will transform them into more credible and people-oriented institutions.
