Spirit of July Uprising is non-discriminatory. Bangladesh must be built: DU VC

Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam has called for building a non-discriminatory, just and democratic Bangladesh by embracing the spirit of the July Uprising. He said, the July Uprising was not a sudden event; it was the continuous result of long-standing discrimination, exploitation, injustice and disregard for the aspirations of the people. History bears witness that no ruler can remain in power for long by taking away the rights of the people.
He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled 'July Mass Uprising 2024: Students' and Public's Aspirations and Future Bangladesh' organized by the Faculty of Science of Dhaka University on Sunday at the conference room of the Faculty of Science and Biology.
The seminar was presided over by Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Abdus Salam. The special guests were Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Mohammad Almojaddidi Alfesani, National University Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Md. Lutfar Rahman and Dhaka University Chemistry Department Emeritus Professor Dr. Tajmeri S. A. Islam. The keynote address was presented by Dhaka University Physics Department Emeritus Professor Dr. A. F. M. Yusuf Haider. The welcome address was delivered by Dean of the Faculty of Science Professor Dr. Md. Mofazzal Hossain.
The program began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, the playing of the national anthem, and a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs of the July Uprising. Later, students who participated in the July Movement shared their experiences and memories.
In his speech as the chief guest, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam said, the experience of deviating from democratic values during the British colonial rule, the Pakistani rule and various times after independence teaches us the same lesson - ignoring justice and the people's opinions is inevitable. He said, if the demands of various mass movements, including the 2018 student movement, were taken into due consideration, a situation like the July 2024 mass uprising could not have arisen. However, the collective participation of students, the public, guardians and people from all walks of life transformed this movement into a mass uprising and ensured its success.
The Vice Chancellor paid deep tribute to the martyrs of the July Uprising and prayed for the forgiveness of their souls and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. He said that the university administration does not want to limit the spirit of July to mere formalities; rather, it wants to embody the ideals of building an anti-discrimination and just society in every activity.
He said that Dhaka University has already taken several initiatives to preserve the memory of the July Uprising. The tuition fee of the first semester of the July fighters has been waived. There are plans to inaugurate the 'July Memorial' at the university on August 5. In addition, work is underway to preserve the July graffiti, establish a memorial corner and implement various related initiatives.
In his speech, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Abdus Salam said that the July 2024 mass uprising was the result of the united resistance of the students and the public against long-standing injustice, discrimination, injustice and deprivation of human rights. This mass uprising was successful with the participation of people from all walks of life and through this, the victory of the people was ensured.
He said, the biggest lesson of the July Uprising is that no state or government should ever walk the path of inequality, oppression and injustice again. Building a just, democratic and inequality-free Bangladesh for future generations is now everyone's main responsibility.
Professor Abdus Salam said that during the July Movement, teachers and students of Dhaka University were involved in the movement in various ways. The history of courage, sacrifice and self-sacrifice of the students who participated in the movement will inspire future generations. He said that the history of the July Uprising should not be just remembered; by implementing its spirit, a society should be built where justice, equality and fundamental rights of the people are ensured and no dictatorial rule will be repeated in the future.
In his speech as a special guest, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) Prof Dr. Mohammad Almojaddidi Alfesani said, "The July Uprising has opened a new chapter in the history of Bangladesh. We must build a non-discriminatory and democratic Bangladesh by embracing this spirit, which was achieved at the cost of thousands of lives."
He said that the 'July Monument' will be inaugurated on August 5. In addition, it has been decided to celebrate Women's Day on July 14 every year in the university's academic calendar. Initiatives have also been taken to establish a 'July Corner' at the university, publish a collection of seminar articles and speeches, and undertake research activities on the July Uprising.

Hall Provost Prof Dr. Md. Nazmul Hossain presided over the program, Proctor Md. Israfil Prang and Professor Al-Amin of the Accounting Department spoke as special guests. In addition, Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdha, brother of July Uprising martyr Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdha, and Sanjida Khan, mother of Shaheed Shahariar Khan Anas, Hall Sangsad VP Md. Mohiuddin (Mahbub Talukder), GS Asif Imam, along with Hall Sangsad leaders and Bangladesh Nationalist Chhatra Dal Hall Branch Convener Gazi Md. Zahidul Islam, and Senior Joint Convener Rizvi Alam spoke. A commemorative documentary film 'Bloody July' on the July Uprising was screened at the program.

A patriotic song was performed by the party under the leadership of the Cultural Affairs Secretary of the Hall Sangsad, Md. Harun Or Rashid (Abrar Harun). Students who were injured and participated in the mass uprising reminisced.
The hall's resident teacher KM Aftabul Islam Tanmoy and assistant resident teacher Aga Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury conducted the program.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam paid tribute to the memory of the July martyrs and said, "We got a new Bangladesh in exchange for their infinite sacrifices." He said, "Our main goal is to create a society without inequality by embodying the spirit of July." He called on everyone to work together to achieve this goal.
