Human chain demanding permission to fish in remaining part of Naf River
Cox’s Bazar Correspondent
Fishermen formed a human chain in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf, demanding permission to fish in the remaining part of the Naf River on Monday.
The human chain was held in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Cox’s Bazar under the banner of the Fishermen’s Community.
Speaking at the rally, the speakers said that a ban was imposed on fishing in the Naf River in April 2017. After nearly 7 years and 9 months, fishermen were granted permission to fish from Shah Porir Dwip to Teknaf Jetty in the Naf River. The permission was granted in February following a High Court order. However, fishing remains prohibited from Teknaf Jetty to the Hnila and Whykong areas. As a result, the fishermen are living in dire conditions. They demanded that the remaining parts of the river also be opened for fishing without delay.
The human chain was presided over by acting Chairman of Hnila Union, Mohammad Ali. Expressing solidarity and delivering speeches at the event were Cox’s Bazar District BNP President Shahjahan Chowdhury, Cox’s Bazar District Jamaat Ameer Nur Ahmed Anwari, Ukhiya BNP Convener Sarwar Jahan Chowdhury, Teknaf Upazila BNP President Advocate Hasan Siddique, and other leaders.
