Because of a new import ban by India, more than 50 trucks carrying food items are stuck at the Burimari Land Port in Lalmonirhat.
Out of them 17 trucks from Pran-RFL Group could not cross into India on May 19, 2024. Their clearances have been canceled due to the ban, and the process to return the goods has started.
These trucks carry packaged foods like juice, potato chips, noodles, and others. The total value of the blocked goods is over Tk 1 crore. Trucks from Akij and Sajeev Group are also stuck.
India banned imports of processed foods, flavored drinks, plastic goods, yarn, cotton waste, wooden furniture, and more. This ban came one month after Bangladesh stopped importing Indian yarn. Bangladesh exported $1.57 billion to India in 2023-24. Now, traders and 350 factories are losing money.
At Burimari border, goods are stuck, even without an official ban. Sending goods by sea costs more and takes longer, hurting small businesses. Traders fear long-term damage. Experts say talk fast and use sea or air to send goods.
