State Minister for Land and Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin has remarked that adhering to the country's laws, dedicating oneself to national development, living in peace and harmony, and enjoying fundamental rights without hindrance constitute the true essence of democracy.
The State Minister made these remarks while addressing a program in Hathazari as the chief guest, organized to mark the 48th founding anniversary of the BNP on Wednesday.
Barrister Mir Helal further stated that the BNP has nurtured and practiced this healthy multi-party democracy since its inception.
Recalling the tenure of the past administration, the State Minister said, "The former fascist government imposed Section 144 to disrupt our rallies and meetings and subjected us to ruthless torture. Despite enduring hundreds of oppressions and hardships, the BNP family has stood firmly on the soil of Hathazari to celebrate its founding anniversary for the past 17 years. Just as the people of this country stood by us in the past, they are with us today and will remain so in the future."
He noted that following the principles of martyred President Ziaur Rahman—the architect of multi-party democracy—the party is actively working to sustain this practice in Bangladesh.
Leaders and activists from the BNP and its affiliated organizations were present at the event.
