An incident of assault on Nizam Uddin, the Upazila Correspondent of the Bengali daily Dainik  Amar Desh  taken place in Madan, Netrokona, following the publication of a report about a motorcycle theft. 

Shamshul Haque Champion, an expelled Jubo Dal leader, allegedly carried out the attack at Natun Bazar in Madan municipal town on Saturday (September 26) evening. In this incident, seeking security of his life, Nizam Uddin filed a General Diary (GD) at Madan Police Station that night.

Shamshul Haque Champion is the son of late Abdus Soban (Abuchan) of Changao Thakurbari. The assaulted journalist, Nizam Uddin Talukdar, is working as the Madan Upazila Correspondent of the daily Amar Desh newspaper. Along with this, he is serving as the Organizing Secretary of the Madan Upazila Reporters Club.

According to police and local people, recently a motorcycle belonging to the expelled Jubo Dal leader was stolen after a funeral prayer. Following the filing of a case at the police station in this incident, the police conducted an operation and recovered the motorcycle on September 25. Reports were published in various online portals regarding the motorcycle theft by another expelled Chhatra Dal leader. However, Shamshul Haque Champion became angry because some online portals mentioned that the Jubo Dal leader had been expelled.

On Saturday evening, Shamshul Haque called journalist Nizam Talukdar and asked him to meet at Natun Bazar. As soon as Nizam Uddin arrived there, Shamshul Haque started abusing him. He shouted and said, “You had made a news report against me about rice theft, and now again you have made a false and distorted news report in my name.” Saying this, Shamshul Haque attacked him and started assaulting him by punching and kicking him. Later, the people present there took Nizam Uddin to a safe place. In this incident, journalist Nizam Uddin filed a General Diary on Saturday night seeking security of his life.

Journalist Nizam Uddin said, “Shamshul Haque Champion was arrested on charges of rice smuggling. Reports were published about this in various news media. Since then, he has been angry with me. Yesterday, Saturday evening, he called me and asked me to meet him. As soon as we met, he attacked me.”

When asked about this, Shamshul Haque Champion said, “I do not know anything about this matter. I have not had any dispute with any journalist.”

Madan Police Station OC Salauddin Karim said, “A General Diary has been filed at Madan Police Station regarding this incident. The matter is being investigated. Legal action in this regard is under process.”
