A destitute ethnic minority woman in Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur has been unable to take possession of her legally recorded land, despite a favorable court ruling, due to alleged threats from a local influential person.

The victim, Nila Sangma, daughter of Prashanta Marak from Jarultola village under Nalkura union, lodged a formal complaint at the Jhenaigati Police Station on July 30.

According to the complaint, an influential individual named Tamir Uddin had illegally occupied and controlled 30 decimals of recorded land belonging to Nila for a long time. Nila subsequently filed a lawsuit over the dispute.

Following a field-level investigation, the Legal Aid judges examined the land documents and, acting on the court's directive, measured and handed over the 30 decimals of land to Nila. On July 30, Nila planted trees on her recovered property.

However, Tamir Uddin and his associates allegedly uprooted the newly planted saplings in a brazen manner. Nila reported that despite the court officially restoring her land rights, the accused parties are barring her from entering the property, issuing continuous threats and intimidation against her and her family.

Living in extreme insecurity, Nila has appealed for urgent intervention from the authorities. Attempts to reach Tamir Uddin for comments were unsuccessful.

Jhenaigati Police Station OC Nur Mohammad confirmed receiving the complaint and stated that legal action is underway following an investigation.
