We must build drug-free society by upholding Sukanta’s ideals : SM Jilani

Kotalipara (Gopalganj) Correspondent

S. M. Jilani, Central President of the Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal and Member of Parliament for Gopalganj-3, said that poet Sukanta Bhattacharya portrayed the disparity between rich and poor, the cries of the hungry, and the need for a safe world for newborns in his poetry.

Each of his works echoed a strong voice of protest against social injustice. He added that efforts are ongoing to spread the ideals of this rebellious poet among the younger generation. As part of that thing, a three-day program including discussions, cultural events, and a rural fair has been organized.

He made these remarks as the chief guest at a preparatory meeting for the Sukanta Fair, organized by the Upazila administration, held on Sunday at the Kotalipara Upazila Parishad hallroom.

He further stated that drug abuse has taken a serious and alarming turn in present-day society. “We want to resist drugs through unity. By embracing Sukanta’s ideals, we aim to build a drug-free society,” he said.

The meeting was presided over by UNO Sagufata Haque. Among others who spoke at the event were Upazila BNP President S. M. Mohiuddin, General Secretary Abul Bashar Hawlader, Municipal BNP President Yousuf Ali Daria, General Secretary Oliur Rahman Hawlader, freedom fighter Abul Kalam Daria, General Secretary of the local Shilpakala Academy Dilip Kumar Bhabuk, and journalist Mizanur Rahman Bulu.

It is mentioned that Sukanta Bhattacharya was born on August 15, 1926, at his maternal uncle’s house on Mahima Halder Street in Kalighat, Kolkata. Although born in Kolkata, his ancestral home is in Unshia village under Amtali Union of Kotalipara Upazila in Gopalganj.

He passed away on May 13, 1947, after suffering from tuberculosis at the Red and Cure Home in Jadavpur, Kolkata.
