Case filed against 32 over murder of youth in Tahirpur

Sylhet Bureau

A murder case has been filed against 32 individuals in connection with the brutal killing of a young man named Al-Amin, who was hacked with machetes and crushed with bricks in Tahirpur upazila, Sunamganj.

The victim's wife, Jhorna Begum, lodged the murder case at the police station on Monday at 3:00 PM. The deceased, Al-Amin, was the son of the late Jalal Uddin from Baliaghat village in the upazila's North Sreepur union.

The lawsuit names 22 individuals—including Abdur Nur and his brother Abdul Latif, both sons of Samej Mia from Baliaghat village—along with an additional 8 to 10 unidentified suspects.

By Monday afternoon, police arrested two of the named accused, Mohibur, son of Abdul Kuddus, and Azizul, son of Wahed Ali, both from Baliaghat village, and forwarded them to court. Sunamganj Superintendent of Police ABM Zakir Hossain, PPM, confirmed the development.

According to the case statement, a minor dispute broke out on Friday during a local football match in Baliaghat when Abdul Latif's son intentionally tripped Al-Amin's nephew, leading to a scuffle between the two teenagers. Upon learning of the incident, Abdul Latif and his followers went to Al-Amin's house that night and issued threats.

When Al-Amin's younger brother Jewel went to the local Baliaghat market on Friday night to settle the matter through arbitration, Latif's men brutally beat him. The following day, Saturday afternoon, a mob of 30 to 32 people from Latif's faction, armed with local weapons and led by Tofazzal Hossain (son of Siddik Ali), launched a targeted attack on Al-Amin's residence.

As Al-Amin stepped out of his home, the assailants hacked him with machetes and crushed his head and body with bricks to ensure his death.

Victim's wife Jhorna Begum stated that Abdur Nur and his brother Abdul Latif led their family and clan members in the premeditated murder of her husband.

Tahirpur UHFPO Dr. Naushad Ahmed said, Al-Amin was dead upon arrival at the upazila health complex. Three others injured in the assault are currently receiving medical treatment at the facility.

Tahirpur Police Station OC Faruk Ahmed stated that following the filing of the case by the victim's family on Monday, the two arrested accused were produced before the court, while drives to apprehend the remaining suspects are actively underway.
