Two children drown in Dinajpur

The bodies of two children who drowned while taking a bath in the Atrai River have been recovered in the Notun Bhusirbandar area of Dinajpur Sadar Upazila.

Dinajpur Kotwali Police Station OC Md. Nurun Nabi confirmed this information on Thursday afternoon.

He said that on Wednesday afternoon, three children went to bathe in the Atrai River near the Sluichgate in Beguntara village of Bhusirbandar in Sadar upazila of the district. At that time, one child was able to swim to the surface, but two children named Sharmi and Brishti drowned in the water.

At 12:30 am on Wednesday, a diving team of Dinajpur Fire Service recovered the body of child Sharmi (12) from the scene. Later, at 10 am on Thursday, the body of child Brishti (11) was recovered from the Ghat of Jhanjira Firingir in Sadar Upazila, about 5 kilometers from the scene of the incident on the Atrai River.

The deceased children are: Sharmi Islam (12), a seventh-grade student, daughter of Md. Shafiqul Islam of Hargaon village in Sundarban Union No. 2 of Sadar Upazila of the district, and Brishti (11), a fifth-grade student, daughter of Md. Babul Islam of the same village.

The bodies of the two children were buried side by side in their family graveyard in Hargaon village of Sadar upazila of the district after the Zuhr funeral prayers on Thursday.
