Second China-Bangladesh roundtable : Emphasis on cooperation in marine resources, disaster management, sustainable development

Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam has called for further strengthening cooperation between Bangladesh and China in marine resource management, climate change, disaster risk reduction, early warning systems, and technology and human resource development, in addition to education and research.
He said that it is possible to create new opportunities for practical cooperation in these areas through the exchange of experience and knowledge between universities, research institutions, and related organizations of the two countries.
He said these while speaking as a special guest at the roundtable titled ' Second China-Bangladesh Roundtable on Governance Experience Exchange ' held at the Intercontinental Hotel in the capital on Monday, September 21, 2026. The event was jointly organized by the Center for China Studies ( CCS ) , Shanghai Institutes for International Studies ( SIIS ) , Dhaka University, OCPASS and Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies ( BIISS ) .
The chief guest at the event was Education Minister Dr. ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon. The special guests were Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam, Shanghai Institutes for International Studies Vice President and Senior Research Fellow Dr. Li Kaisheng, and Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh Li Shaoping. Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury spoke as the guest of honor.
Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam said, since its establishment, Dhaka University has been working as an important center of higher education, research and intellectual exchange. Along with knowledge creation and exchange, the university also attaches importance to expanding the scope of international cooperation. It is possible to transform the long-standing friendly relations between Bangladesh and China into more effective cooperation through education, research and institutional partnerships.
The DU Vice-Chancellor said that China's experience in marine research, engineering, fisheries and aquatic resources management and infrastructure development can be important for Bangladesh. Similarly, Bangladesh's experience in coastal adaptation and management of densely populated coastal areas can also be shared with China. Recently, two MoUs were renewed between Dhaka University and China's First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) to further expand cooperation in oceanography, ocean observation, forecasting, climate research and disaster resilience.
Chief guest, Education Minister Dr. ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon said that education and human resource development can play an important role in further strengthening the relations between Bangladesh and China. To transform Bangladesh's vast youth population into skilled human resources, it is necessary to build effective linkages between education, technology, research and industry. He also mentioned that Bangladesh can learn from China's development experience.
Guest of Honour Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury said that Bangladesh-China relations need to be further expanded through government-to-government level as well as education, research, technology and people-to-people exchanges. Along with infrastructure and technological investment, sound policies, effective institutions, management skills and implementation capacity are important for sustainable development.
At the roundtable, experts and researchers from China and Bangladesh exchanged views on various issues including good governance and development experience exchange, ocean-based economy, climate change, disaster risk reduction, education, research, technology and human resource development.
