 The National Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (NINMAS) at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) organized a daylong training program and scientific seminar on "Pediatric Nuclear Medicine: Scintigraphy, SPECT-CT and Clinical Practice" at the Kamal Uddin Ahmed Auditorium in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Presided over by NINMAS Director and Bangladesh Thyroid Society President Prof Dr. A. K. M. Fazlul Bari, the seminar brought together 18 trainee doctors and specialists from nuclear medicine, pediatrics, and allied departments.

Delivering the keynote presentation on Tuesday, Professor Dr. Nasreen Sultana highlighted the critical role of nuclear medicine techniques in pediatric healthcare, specifically emphasizing HIDA scans for diagnosing biliary atresia, DTPA and DMSA renal scans, Meckel's scans for detecting intestinal bleeding in children, and brain perfusion tests to assess cerebral function.

In his presidential address, Prof Dr. A. K. M. Fazlul Bari noted that this initiative marks the first dedicated training course on pediatric nuclear medicine hosted by NINMAS. He emphasized that nuclear medicine is a vital multidisciplinary field supporting all branches of medical science, adding that cross-departmental coordination is essential to make advanced diagnostic services accessible to low-income populations in Bangladesh.

Prof  Bari further highlighted that along with  nuclear medicine techniques, NINMAS utilizes ultrasonogram, Doppler, elastoscan, and PET-CT technologies for accurate diagnosis, while its specialized thyroid Department. 

The seminar was attended by Chairman of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition Prof  Dr. Md. Rukunuzzaman, Prof Dr. Helena Begum of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, Prof  Dr. Garima Jahan of Pediatric Nephrology, and Assistant Prof  Dr. Mohammad Badrul Alam.
