The district-level competition of the Deputy Commissioner Gold Cup Football Tournament has been inaugurated in Meherpur. Sadar Upazila XI has reached the final after defeating Mujibnagar Upazila 4-1 in the opening game.

The winner of the second game will face the winner of the final on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner Shilpi Rani Roy inaugurated the tournament as the chief guest at the Meherpur District Stadium on Thursday afternoon. District Council Administrator and District BNP President Javed Masud Milton, Additional District Magistrate Tajwar Akram Shakapi Ibne Sajjad, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Tariqul Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Partha Pratim Shil, Meherpur Government College Principal Professor Dr. Nazrul Kabir, Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Bablu Sutradhar, Mujibnagar Upazila Executive Officer Saiful Huda, District BNP General Secretary Advocate Kamrul Hasan, Meherpur Municipal Degree College Principal and Upazila BNP President Fayez Uddin, Upazila BNP General Secretary Shahidul Islam and District Sports Association Member Secretary Rakibul Hasan, Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Habibur Rahman, Estamul Haque and Bhuban Chandra Halder and Project Implementation Officer Saidur Rahman.

In the opening match, Meherpur Sadar Upazila made a good start to the tournament by defeating Mujibnagar Upazila by 4-1 goals. Himel scored a pair of goals for the winning team. In addition, Kiran and Miraj scored one goal each. Shakib scored the only goal for Mujibnagar Upazila. Himel was adjudged Man of the Match for his excellent performance. With his extraordinary performance, Meherpur Sadar Upazila started the tournament with a big win. Despite the cloudy weather, the presence of spectators in the gallery of the district stadium was noticeable. There was a lot of excitement among football fans surrounding the opening ceremony and the match.
