Legal notice seeks halving of July's broadband internet bills

A Supreme Court lawyer has sent a legal notice to collect only 50% of the current month's broadband internet service charges from customers due to a nationwide outage.
The notice requires all broadband service providers to take necessary action within 48 hours.
Ishrat Hasan, a Supreme Court lawyer, sent the legal notice on behalf of the Mobile Phone Consumers Association via registered mail on Monday (July 29).
The notice has been sent to four recipients, including the Secretary of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, and the Chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
The notice requests immediate compensation for the damages caused to the public due to the internet outage and urges measures to address the issues related to slow internet speeds currently affecting users.
Notably, broadband internet services were disrupted from around 9pm on July 18. Limited internet services were restored in Dhaka and Chattogram after five consecutive days on July 23.
The disruption followed the announcement by State Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, who stated that mobile internet services were halted due to the quota reform movement.
However, the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology did not take responsibility for the broadband internet shutdown.
