Irregularities in LGED development  projects in  Patgram alleged

‎Meheruban Habib. Patgram (Lalmonirhat)

‎Allegations of prolonged tenure in the same workplace, close ties with contractors, irregularities in development project implementation, and weaknesses in the management of government assets have surfaced against the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) office in Patgram Upazila of Lalmonirhat.

These allegations have sparked widespread discussion and criticism among local residents.

‎According to an investigation, several LGED officials and employees have been serving at the same office for many years. Local residents claim that the extended stay of some officials has led to unusually close relationships with contractors, raising concerns about transparency and accountability in project implementation.

‎Sources revealed that Sub-Engineer Saurav Kumar has been serving in the Patgram LGED office for approximately eight years, Sub-Engineer Makin Mia for around eight years, and Work Assistant Hossain Mia for nearly seven years. Allegations have also emerged that some officials returned to the same workplace after being transferred elsewhere.

‎Concerned citizens have questioned the quality of work carried out under several development projects. According to local allegations, poor-quality construction in some cases has resulted in the misuse of public funds, while inadequate supervision has affected project standards.

‎There are also claims that transparency was not properly maintained in the expenditure of funds allocated to certain development projects during the current fiscal year. Some residents have further alleged that particular contractors received preferential treatment during project implementation.

‎The investigation also found concerns regarding the accountability and management of government furniture, equipment, and other assets within the office. Locals alleged that some materials were not properly preserved and that clear information regarding their whereabouts could not be obtained later.

‎Responding to the allegations, Sub-Engineer Makin Mia stated that transfer decisions are made solely by higher authorities and denied claims of having personal relationships with contractors.

‎LGED Engineer Ahmed Haider Zaman also rejected the allegations, saying that all development projects were implemented in accordance with government rules and regulations and that the accusations were baseless.

‎Meanwhile, the Executive Engineer of LGED in Lalmonirhat stated that if any specific information or written complaints are submitted, the matter will be investigated and necessary action will be taken.

‎Local residents believe that an impartial investigation is essential to ensure transparency and accountability in government-funded development projects. They have also called for the transfer of officials who have remained in the same workplace for an extended period and for financial and technical audits of project implementation.

‎Members of the local civil society argue that an independent inquiry would help uncover the facts, ensure the proper use of public funds, maintain the quality of development projects, and strengthen public confidence in government institutions.
