Indefinite hunger strike demanding cancellation of Ward Quota at JU

JU Correspondent

Students of Jahangirnagar University staged an indefinite hunger strike demanding complete abolition of Ward Quota in admission process.

A group of students from Jahangirnagar University (JU) has initiated an indefinite mass hunger strike, demanding the complete cancellation of the controversial "Ward Quota" in the university's admission process.

On Sunday at 11:30am, seven students initiated the strike in front of the new administrative building under the banner of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The students have vowed to continue their hunger strike until the irrational ward quota is abolished.

Nadia Rahman Anvesha, one of the protesting students, stated, "The movement for quota reform that began in 2024 was aimed at achieving a rational restructuring of the quota system. We demanded the elimination of all unjust quotas. However, post-uprising, we have witnessed university administrations, standing on the blood of martyrs, betraying their sacrifices by retaining the unjust ward quota. This is why we have launched this indefinite mass hunger strike today. We will continue our protest until our demands are met."

Asking about the movement Touhid Mohammad Siam, Secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement's JU branch said, "The irrational ward quota still exists at Jahangirnagar University. Since this quota lacks any logical justification, we do not believe it requires reform—it must be entirely abolished."
