The 31st Annual Scientific Conference, organized by the Bangladesh Society for Veterinary Education and Research (BSVER), was inaugurated at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU). This year’s theme focuses on “ Climate Change: Animal Health and Food Safety”, addressing the global challenges posed by climate change.
The conference was inaugurated on Saturday at 10 AM at the university’s Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Auditorium.
The keynote address was delivered by Professor Dr. Mohammad Shamsuddin, Senior Animal Production and Health Officer at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Ghana. He highlighted the adverse effects of climate change, including rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, and greenhouse gas emissions, which are negatively impacting food security and the livestock sector. He pointed out that declining forage quality and excessive use of antibiotics are deteriorating food safety. Furthermore, the rise in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) could put 10 million lives at risk annually by 2050.
The two-day event has drawn participation from over 500 researchers, veterinarians, and students from 13 universities and six institutions across the country and abroad. On the first day, the program featured seminars, plenary sessions, and a cultural evening. The second day, Sunday, February 2, will feature 12 technical sessions, where researchers will present 90 oral and 162 poster presentations. Awards will be given to six outstanding poster presentations and 12 best oral presentations.
The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Prof Dr. Md. Alimul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) and President of the BSVER Executive Committee. The chief guest of the event was Professor Dr. A.K. Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan, Vice-Chancellor of BAU. Special guests included Prof Dr. Md.
