Fisheries Week inaugurated : MP Jilani calls for ban on illegal fishing nets in Tungipara

National Fisheries Week 2026 was inaugurated in Tungipara with the theme “Rupali Fisheries is a self-reliant country, Bangladesh comes first.”
A colourful rally, fish fry release and discussion meeting were organized by the Upazila Administration and Upazila Fisheries Department on Sunday. Later, awards and honors were given to successful fish farmers and people who contributed to fish conservation.
Gopalganj-3 constituency MP SM Jilani was the chief guest at the discussion meeting held at the Upazila Parishad auditorium. UNO Mohammad Didarul Alam presided over the meeting. Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Debashish Bachar delivered the welcome speech.
As the chief guest, SM Jilani said everyone should come forward to protect domestic fish. In addition to stopping the fishing of mother fish, fish sanctuaries should be increased to ensure the reproduction and safe movement of fish.
UHFPO Dr. Tanvir Ahmed, Police Station OC Ayub Ali, Upazila BNP President Sheikh Salauddin, Agriculture Officer Prashant Howlader and Livestock Officer Dr. Prakash Biswas spoke at the meeting.
Md. Asaduzzaman Sheikh of Dumuria Union was honoured as a successful fish farmer at the event. In addition, Md. Hitu Sikder of Char Gopalpur, Mohammad Arif of Par Jhanjhnia and others who cooperated in fisheries conservation were given awards and commemorative mementos.
