DU VC Dr Obaidul Islam meets PM

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam met with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat on Thursday.

Dhaka University White Panel Convener, Syndicate Member and Professor of Marketing Department Dr. Md. Morshed Hasan Khan were present at the time.

During the meeting, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam informed the Prime Minister about the overall security situation of the campus, the progress of various development projects including major development projects, Dhaka University's proposed 20-year academic development plan, education and research activities, steps taken to strengthen industry-academia relations, joint education and research activities conducted with various renowned universities of the world, and various steps taken recently for the welfare of students, including increasing alumni networking.

The Vice Chancellor sought the Prime Minister's cooperation in obtaining special status for Dhaka University for its glorious contribution to various democratic movements including the great language movement, the war of independence, and the 2024 anti-discrimination student movement. In addition, the Vice Chancellor also sought the Prime Minister's cooperation in increasing the university's research fund, developing industry-academia relations and strengthening alumni networking, developing education and research on artificial intelligence, third language, biology, biotechnology and robotics, and creating internship opportunities for students in various industries. He said that co-curricular activities need to be strengthened in various residential halls, departments and institutes to instill creativity, morality, tolerance and human values among students. In this regard too, he sought the Prime Minister's cooperation.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman assured all-round cooperation in the implementation of major development projects, granting special status to Dhaka University and improving the university's education and research. He said that everyone will have to work together to elevate Dhaka University to a respectable level in international rankings. The university will have to be taken forward with the cooperation of alumni.

The Vice-Chancellor invited the Prime Minister to attend the convocation, which is likely to be held in January. The Prime Minister accepted the invitation and agreed to attend the convocation ceremony.

The Vice-Chancellor thanked the Prime Minister for her compassion for Dhaka University and her sincere cooperation in all areas, including its education, research, and development activities.
