Municipal Councilor Md. Azizul Haque (40) was seriously injured in an attack by expatriate family members after burying the body in Gafargaon, Mymensingh.

The incident took place in the Eidgah field area of Janmajoy village in the municipal city on Friday morning. A case is under process at the police station.

It is known that Mofazzal Hossain (35), the son of deceased Abdul Jabbar of Janmejoy village of Paur city, lived abroad.

Communication with family members was severed. His wife Najma (32), a mother of two children, was not in contact with the family. He lived in a rented house with his children. Mofazzal died on October 20 after being ill for a long time while in exile. The body of the expatriate arrived in the country on Friday morning.

Before his death, he forbade his family members from attending his funeral and asked him to be buried in the official graveyard. While Mofazzal's wife kept her husband's word, Municipal Councilor Azizul Haqq agreed to sit down with the family members to take a decision.

Taking the councilor along with him, it was decided to bury the body at Shahjahan's hardware store in Jirani Mor. The councilor's family did not accept the decision given by the municipal councilor.

While coming in front of Janmejoy Eidga ground, Mofazzal's mother Rupjan (58), brother Mithun (32), sister Runa (30) and sister-in-law Azizul (40) blocked the way and engaged in a verbal argument.

At one point, they attacked Councilor Azizul with iron rods and bamboo. He hit his hand and head and seriously injured him. Later the locals rescued him and brought him to the Upazila Health Complex.

Farooq Ahmed, OC of Gafargaon police station, said that the police have been sent to the spot. The case is pending. The incident will be investigated and necessary action will be taken.
