Sylhet Bureau
An allegation has been raised that a fifth-grade student died due to the negligence of a neighbor couple who attempted to cover up the incident of him falling from a tree in Tahirpur, Sunamganj.
The deceased student is Siam Akhandji (12). He was the only son of Shoyeb Akhandji of Thakurhati in the Upazila headquarters and was a fifth-grade student at Tahirpur Model Government Primary School.
According to the victim Siam's family sources, the neighbors, Deb Das and his wife, of Thakurhati in the Upazila headquarters, enticed the child Siam to climb their betel nut tree on Tuesday noon to pick betel nuts without prior permission from his guardians.
After falling from the tree while picking betel nuts and sustaining a serious injury (literally: becoming bloodied), Deb Das and his wife, unbeknownst to others, deprived him of medical attention and secretly left the motionless Siam lying on the ground in the gap between two houses.
After the incident became known among the neighbours, Siam was taken to the Upazila Health Complex by a rickshaw driver passing on the road four hours after he fell.
When his condition deteriorated, he was taken to Sylhet M.A.G. Osmani Medical College Hospital, where Siam succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night.
Tahirpur Thana Second Officer Najmul Islam, said, "Siam's post-mortem was completed at Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital on Wednesday, and legal action will be taken upon receipt of complaint."
