Md. Lavlu Sheikh, Lalmonirhat
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has announced that an initiative has been undertaken to establish a modern drug rehabilitation center and hospital in the border district of Lalmonirhat at a cost of Tk 150 crore to treat, rehabilitate, and recover drug addicts.
Speaking as the chief guest on Sunday afternoon at a virw exchange meeting and cultural program held to mark the inauguration of a newly constructed six-story academic building at Majida Khatun Government Mohila College in Lalmonirhat town, the minister stated that the government has earmarked Tk 150 crore for the project, with implementation expected to commence within the next year.
Highlighting the district's geographical challenges, Minister Dulu noted that Lalmonirhat's border location exposes it to heightened risks of drug inflow. He stressed that controlling drug abuse requires more than just intensifying law enforcement operations—it necessitates a coordinated approach combining medical treatment, rehabilitation, and social awareness campaigns.
Calling for a robust, long-term social movement to protect the younger generation from the devastating impacts of narcotics, Dulu emphasized that families, educational institutions, social organizations, and public representatives must work together to build effective resistance against drugs.
Reflecting on the "Enlightened Lalmonirhat" initiative, he noted that public engagement is being scaled up against various social blights, including drug abuse, child marriage, dowry, gambling, bribery, and corruption, which can transform Lalmonirhat into a model district for crime prevention.
Addressing child marriage, the minister underscored the crucial role of families and educational institutions, noting that increased educational opportunities are empowering girls to advance in higher education, employment, and civic life.
Praising the academic standards and results of Majida Khatun Government Mohila College, the minister remarked that the institution stands among the premier colleges in Lalmonirhat, achieving stellar results year after year through disciplined administration, management, and skilled faculty.
Presided over by College Principal Professor Dilip Kumar Roy, the event was addressed by Deputy Commissioner Muha. Rashedul Haque Prodhan, Superintendent of Police Md. Asaduzzaman, District Council Administrator A.K.M. Mominul Haque, Vice-Principal and Convener Md. Shariful Islam, Engineer Md. Golam Mostofa, and Teachers' Council General Secretary Abdul Karim Sadeki.
The program concluded with a vibrant cultural performance presented by the college students, which was enjoyed by the minister and invited guests.
