Baraigram (Natore) Correspondent

The motive behind the sensational murder of Momtaz Begum, wife of Engineer Shafiullah in Baraigram upazila of Natore, has been revealed within three days by Baraigram police.

With the help of technology, police arrested two people who directly involved in the murder. They are Fauzia Khatun (20) and her husband Minarul (25). Fauzia is the daughter of Shahinuzzaman Shahin of Sardarpara village and the granddaughter of the deceased.

According to local and police sources, after her husband’s death, Momtaz Begum had been living in her home with two caretakers Abu Shama Kazi (65), son of late Yunus Kazi of the same village, and Sufia Khatun (27), wife of late Jahangir Hossain of nearby Pathanpara village.

At the time of the incident, both caretakers were reportedly away from the house. Abu Shama Kazi had gone to the mosque at around 8 p.m. Taking advantage of the situation, Fauzia first entered her grandmother’s room alone and later called in her husband. Together, they snatched Momtaz Begum’s gold ornaments — a necklace, bangles, three rings, and ear rings and brutally murdered her.

The couple tried to flee to Dhaka after selling the jewelry but police arrested them from Natore Harishpur Bus Stand at around 11 on Wednesday night. Investigation revealed that greed for the gold ornaments was the motive behind the murder.

Baraigram Police Station OC Md Golam Sarwar Hossain confirmed that the arrested Fauzia Khatun and Minarul have been sent to jail.
