11 injured in clash between lawyers, anti-discrimination students in Jamalpur court
Jamalpur Correspondent
At least 112 people have been injured in clashes between lawyers and anti-discrimination students in Jamalpur District Judge's Court on Monday afternoon.
The clash erupted over the issue of a lawyer forging a birth certificate to influence the court in an attempt to prove the innocence of the accused in a rape case and divert the case to a different court. Anti-discrimination students and lawyers have made counter-allegations in this regard.
Mahmudul Hasan Vivek, spokesperson for the anti-discrimination students said, the lawyers of the accused in the much-discussed rape case of a disabled person resorted to forging a birth certificate to influence the court. On hearing this news, an eager crowd, including students, began to gather in the court premises. After the hearing in the learned court, when we tried to talk to the accused's lawyer Nazrul Islam Tarafdar about resorting to fraud, the lawyer misbehaved. At one stage of the argument, tension spread. At that time, the situation became more chaotic when the lawyers and their assistants attacked us together.
We think that the legal profession is very noble. In addition to making it a signboard and harassing the trial seekers in the court, it has now become the target of the lawyers to make the plaintiff and the defendant helpless and extort money. We want to get rid of this. After seeing the CCTV footage, we demand that the attackers be brought under the law. At the same time, we demand that the certificates of the miscreants be cancelled.
On the other hand, when Advocate Abdul Awal, Senior Vice President of the District Lawyers' Association and Secretary of the District Jamaat, went to talk to the students, they also attacked and attacked the lawyers. This led to a clash between both parties. At that time, Advocate Khalilur Rahman (80), Advocate Abdul Awal (55), Advocate Omar Faruk (47), Advocate Nazrul Islam Tarafdar (55), Legal Assistant Ruknuzzaman (40), students Jahangir's son Emon (20) and Ishan (15) of Dayamoyee area, Moaz (19) son of Mozammel of Itail area of Sadar upazila, Tarek (23) son of Abdul Mannan of Hasil Battala area, Shishir (18) son of Shahzada of Muslimabad area of the municipality, and Hridoy (23) of Islampur upazila were injured. Among the injured, Adv. Khalilur Rahman returned home after receiving treatment at Jamalpur General Hospital.
Among the students, Moaz, Hridoy, and Tarek were admitted to the hospital. Moaz, who was admitted to the hospital, was seriously injured after being shot in the leg by police during the July Revolution. At one stage of the chase and counter-chase between students and lawyers, the lawyers detained and locked up two brothers, students Emon and Ishan. Later, the police took them out of the court safely.
General Secretary of the District Bar Association Rishad Rezwan Babu said that during the court session, some miscreants entered with sticks and threatened the lawyers. They attacked the lawyers and injured four lawyers. A decision will be taken to take legal action after discussing with the officials of the District Bar Association.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Yahya Al Mamun said, the matter is being reviewed. Action will be taken after investigation if a complaint is received.
