
Rallies, discussions, field exercises held in Barishal to celebrate International Day for Disaster Reduction

"Integrated Initiatives, Prevent Disasters" was the slogan of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief organized by the Divisional Administration Barishal at 10 am on Monday to celebrate the International Disaster Reduction Day-2025.
A colourful rally was held from the Circuit House premises in the morning, and a discussion meeting was held at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium after circumambulating the important roads of the city.
Faruk-e-Azam, Bir Pratik, Adviser, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief and Ministry of Liberation War Affairs was present as the chief guest in the rally and discussion meeting.
Divisional Commissioner Barishal Md. Raihan Kawsar presided over the program.
Md. Mostafizur Rahman, Secretary, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Rewanur Rahman, Director General, Department of Disaster Management, Deputy Inspector General of Police Barisal Range Barisal Md. Manjur Morshed Alam, Police Commissioner Barisal Metropolitan Police Md. Shafiqul Islam, Deputy Commissioner Barisal Mohammad Delwar Hossain, Superintendent of Police Barisal Md. Sharif Uddin, members of divisional and district committees and representatives of government and non-government organizations were present as special guests. The guests discussed various important issues of the International Disaster Reduction Day. CPP members demonstrated field exercises to deal with disasters and disasters at Bells Park in the city.
Many districts of Barishal division are located in the coastal region. The districts of this division have been affected to varying degrees by the devastating cyclone Sidr in 1970 and the recent cyclones Remal, Mokha, Sitrang etc. The government has constructed several cyclone shelters and disaster shelters in this region to provide shelter to the affected people. Bridge-culvert and Herring Bone Bond (HBB) roads have been constructed in all the upazilas of the division. In addition, the procurement of various relief items such as dry food, blankets, corrugated iron has been decentralized.
About 80,000 volunteers have been created for the coastal area. This year's 'International Disaster Reduction Day' is being celebrated nationally in Barisal to exchange views on the role of various steps taken by the government in dealing with disasters.
