UGC chief urges merit-based research evaluation

University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Dr Mamun Ahmed has urged evaluators to assess research proposals purely on quality and usefulness, free from external influence, pressure, or bias.
Speaking as chief guest at a discussion on the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) project sub-project evaluation criteria at the National Science and Technology Complex on Wednesday, the UGC Chairman stressed that merit, relevance, and tangible outcomes must drive selection.
"Research is the lifeblood of universities. We must prioritize work that benefits the nation and ensures public funds are spent effectively," Prof Mamun said, warning of strict action against delays or irregularities in project implementation.
UGC Member Prof Dr Md Aslam Hossain and HEAT Project Director Dr Asaduzzaman also addressed the program.
