Two get life in Alamdanga Jhantu murder case

A court in Chuadanga has delivered its verdict in the sensational Jhantu murder case in Alamdanga after a long legal battle of 17 years. Based on the testimonies and evidence of 20 witnesses, two accused individuals have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Additionally, each of them has been fined Tk 50,000, failing which they will have to undergo an additional two months of rigorous imprisonment.
On Wednesday , Md. Moktagir Alam, Judge of the Chuadanga District and Sessions Judge Court and the Repression of Violence Against Women and Children Tribunal (Child Repression Suppression Tribunal), pronounced the verdict in a packed courtroom.
The convicted defendants are Ismail Hossain, son of Soleman Ali, and Abul Kalam Azad, son of the late Abu Chaddin, both hailing from Shalika village under Gangni Union in Alamdanga Upazila.
According to the case statement, on April 19, 2009, around 7:30 PM, Jhantu left home with money after receiving a phone call from accused Ismail Hossain regarding financial transactions related to the betel leaf (pan) business. The following morning, on April 20, his lifeless body was recovered from a paddy field in the village. Following the incident, the victim's father, Zaha Baksh Mondal, filed a murder case with the Alamdanga Police Station, accusing Ismail Hossain and two to three unidentified individuals.
During the investigation, police confirmed the involvement of Abul Kalam Azad alongside Ismail Hossain. On December 28, 2009, the investigating officer submitted a final chargesheet against the duo to the court.
After 17 years of legal procedures and judicial proceedings, and following a thorough review of testimonies from 20 witnesses and all evidence, the court found the accused guilty and delivered the verdict.
Expressing satisfaction over the verdict, Advocate A. S. M. Abdur Rouf, PP of the Tribunal, said, Based on proper testimonies and evidence, the court has sentenced the two accused to life imprisonment and fines. The prosecution is satisfied with this verdict, and the victim's family has finally received justice after a long wait.
