A trawler carrying goods worth approximately six crore taka has sunk in the Meghna River near the island upazila of Hatiya in Noakhali. However, all six crew members aboard the trawler survived unharmed on Monday afternoon.
The trawler heading from Chattogram to Hatiya’s Tamruddi Ghat met with an accident in the area between Sandwip and Bhashanchar. The trawler was carrying a large consignment of rods, cement, tin, and grocery items.
It is reported that the trawler, named 'MV Sharif-1', set off from Chattogram port with the goods. Midway through the journey, the river turned rough, causing the lower structure of the trawler to crack suddenly, and water quickly flooded in, leading to the vessel's sinking.
Amir Hossain Majhi, the owner and operator of the trawler, said, “After leaving Chattogram in the morning, we passed Sandwip and were nearing Bhashanchar when we were hit by strong winds and waves. Before we could react, the bottom of the trawler cracked.” He added that goods worth nearly six crore taka were onboard and all were lost to the river.
Fortunately, the crew managed to seek refuge on a nearby commercial vessel during the crisis, which prevented any loss of life.
Hatiya UNO Md. Alauddin said, the accident occurred due to worsening weather conditions. Since no lives were lost, that is a major relief. The local administration has launched a preliminary investigation into the matter.
