Low-lying areas flooded after two days torrential rain in Mirsarai

Continuous rainfall over the past two days has caused flooding in the low-lying areas in Mirsarai.

Several houses in Abu Torab Fena Puni, Duyaru, several wards of Mirsarai Municipality, Govshia, Sarkar Tola, and Purbo Mayani have been inundated, severely affecting the resident families.

It has been reported that due to heavy overnight rainfall on Monday (June 16) and hill torrents, water has entered multiple low-lying areas of the upazila. The hill torrents washed away a road in Duyaru village under Khaiachhara Union. Additionally, in Osmanpur Union (Ward 5), the collapse of a CDSP embankment resulted in over a hundred fish farms being submerged, affecting hundreds of fish farmers.

Saifullah, a resident of Fena Puni village, said the road gets damaged every year by the hill torrents. On Monday night, due to heavy rain and hill torrents, water started flowing over the damaged area. If the flow continues, the road might collapse entirely and turn into a canal.

Anisul Haque, a resident of the Muhuri Project area, stated that the collapse of the CDSP embankment has submerged thousands of acres of fish farms. To protect the area from Bay of Bengal erosion, an 11.5-kilometer-long embankment was constructed in 1994 under the Char Development and Settlement Project (CDSP). However, the recent heavy rains caused the embankment to collapse, flooding vast stretches of fish farms.

Kamrul Islam, a resident of Ward 1 in Korerhat area, mentioned that unplanned canal excavation by BADC is endangering homesteads and croplands. Recently, erosion has started around Molla Bari and its surroundings near Tilker Canal in Alinagar village under Korerhat Union.

Locals alleged that this year, nearly four kilometers of Sonaichhari and Tilker canals were excavated under the Bangladesh Agriculture and Development Corporation. Due to the unplanned excavation, erosion has begun.

Mirsarai Upazila Agriculture Officer Protap Chandra Roy said that two days of rainfall would not cause significant damage to vegetables and Aush paddy. However, if the rain continues for a few more days, there is a risk of damage.

Mirsarai UNO  Somaia Akter Sohagi said that they have received reports of waterlogging in several unions due to continuous rainfall. The administration will prepare a list of poor and unemployed people to provide them with food assistance.
