Rob migrated to Libya on loan, held captive, demanded ransom of 2.6 million taka

Noakhali Correspondent

In the hope of changing his fate, Md. Abdur Rob (25) of Kabirhat Upazila of Noakhali migrated to Libya three years ago on loan.

After being missing for 12 days, the mafia gang sent a video of torture to the family from an unknown number and demanded 2.6 million taka as ransom. The parents became sick after learning about the brutal torture of their child.

The victim, Md. Abdur Rob, is the son of Md. Abdur Rahim of Patwari Bari of Madhya Sundalpur village, Sundalpur Union, No. 2, Kabirhat Upazila of the district.

According to family sources, Abdur Rob migrated to Libya in 2022 on loan in the hope of making a living. Then Abdur Rob took his younger brother Abdur Rahman (23) to Libya. Two brothers worked in a company in Al Khamash Municipality there. On January 14, while they were going to Misalta for work, the police arrested a total of 4 people, including Abdur Rab and Abdur Rahman, at a fake check post. Then, after checking the documents and releasing the three, the police took Abdur Rab away.

When contacted later, they said that he was with the Tripoli Police Station, but Abdur Rab could not be found there after searching. After a long 12 days, on January 26, a mafia group from a Bangladeshi imo number said that they had bought Abdur Rab from the police for 2 million taka. If they gave them 2.6 million taka, they would release Abdur Rab. From then on, the picture of torture increased. After sending a video of the torture, the family was given several Bangladeshi bank account numbers to quickly pay money. Abdur Rab's father has nothing except the land, and his parents and family members are spending their days crying.

Abdur Rab's mother Tajnahar Begum said, "I have nothing except two percent of my husband's house." They killed my son and gave me a video call. My heart is breaking but I am a helpless mother. I have nothing to do. I seek help from Dr. Yunus Sir. I want my child back.

Abdur Rab's elder sister Jannatul Naeem Sonia said, We are two sisters, two brothers. I am the eldest child and then Abdur Rab. The two brothers have been sent abroad with money on interest. The mafia gang has imprisoned my brother in a room and is torturing him in a medieval style and demanding 2.6 million taka from us. They are also threatening to torture and kill him if we do not pay. The gang regularly calls and shows scenes of torture on my brother. Unable to see the scenes of torture, we all burst into tears. My parents fainted.

Abdur Rab's father Abdur Rahim said, I am a sick person, I cannot do any work. The mafia gang is demanding 2.6 million taka but I do not have the capacity to pay 26 thousand taka. I have taken a loan to send my children abroad and have not been able to repay it to this day. Seeing such audio-videos of child abuse is incomprehensible. We seek help from Dr. Yunus Sir. We will pray for him all our lives.

Local resident Faruk Hossain and a very old man said that the kidnapped Abdur Rab is a very humble and polite boy. The Libyan police sold him to brokers. There are also Bangladeshis with that gang. They gave them various domestic account numbers. If the government checks and sorts out, it will be able to arrest the mafia gang. Then no child of any parent will have to be abused like this. We want Chief Advisor Dr. Yunus Sir to take necessary action through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Assistant Director of Noakhali Expatriates Welfare Center Khurshid Alam said, I am shocked by the matter. The victim's family has submitted a complaint to our office. It will be sent to the Libyan Embassy through the ministry. I hope the government will stand by this remittance fighter.
