Road being constructed with low quality materials in Chandina

Zakir Azad, Cumilla

The road is being  constructed  in Chandina with poor quality materials is in disrepair, causing extreme suffering to drivers and passengers in potholes.

The road under construction in Chandina, Cumilla, at a cost of about 9 crore taka, has been damaged. The 6.25-kilometer road has been repaired in five months, let alone the contractor has not yet reached the stage of carpeting. In addition, during the current monsoon season, the road has been damaged at various places and small and large potholes have formed across the road, making it unfit for traffic.

A contractor  Omar Traders has been given the job of repairing the road from Kutumbpur Bus Station to Keshera in the upazila. The locals were outraged by the fact that the road was constructed using low-quality bricks mixed with soil and macadam. The news of the irregularities in the road renovation was published in various media  an on-site investigation was conducted and the relevant authorities finally removed the macadam of about 200 meters of the road.

During the current monsoon season, a collapse occurred in front of the Fakir house adjacent to Parchanga Bazar. About 8 feet of the road, which is 12 feet wide without a slab, has collapsed into a hole. Traffic is extremely difficult and residents of at least 8 villages are in trouble. In addition, small and large holes have formed across the road. In some places, cloth is being tied to bamboo poles to warn drivers.

Local resident Habblu Rafiq said - The road collapsed due to the soil (solder) being cut from the edge of the road and water coming down from the house. Even when the breach was small, we said the contractor's people several times, but they did not listen to us.
A local resident named Nazmul said - the contractor is working as he pleases. He works for a few days and then stops work for a few weeks. The road is in such a bad condition due to his negligence.

A CNG driver waker Miah, who is plying on that road, expressed his anger and said - the road was good before the renovation work started. Today, there has been extreme suffering for 4-5 months. It has become almost impossible to move vehicles through the area where a culvert in Kutumbpur has been broken and a diversion has been made nearby.

Jalal Uddin Kala, the owner of Omar Traders, said - The work is not being done properly due to rain. And the incident occurred when rainwater fell from the houses next to the road where the breach occurred. When the rain subsides, we will repair it with drums on the side of the road.

When asked if the locals had requested him to repair it in the first place, contractor Jalal Uddin got angry and said, "Are there any people in this country? Do the people understand anything? Will we build roads for them with gold?"

Chandina  LGED Upazila Engineer Mohammad Rakibul Islam said,  the contractor has been instructed to repair the damage to the road quickly. It has also been asked to start the road work when the rains subside."
