Mutual trust and cooperation between the police and the public are essential to building a drug- and terrorism-free society, said Mohammad Ashik Saeed, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Rajshahi Range of Bangladesh Police.

He made the remarks on Sunday while addressing a community policing meeting on drugs, terrorism and extremism at the Baraigram Upazila Parishad Auditorium in Natore.

DIG Mohammad Ashik Saeed said political leaders, elected representatives, community leaders and teachers must come forward to build a drug- and terrorism-free society and extend cooperation to the police. He urged people to stand beside the oppressed, persecuted and helpless irrespective of their religion, community or political affiliation, guided by conscience, wisdom and humanity.

He also stressed the importance of abiding by the existing laws of the country and said that no one should take the law into their own hands. The chief guest at the meeting, Member of Parliament for Natore-4 constituency Mohammad Abdul Aziz, said families and teachers at educational institutions have a crucial role to play in keeping young people and students away from criminal activities.

“Students must be kept away from the dangers of drugs. Drug addiction can lead students to drop out of school and become involved in various forms of crime. This ultimately hampers the development of society and the country,” he said.

He further urged parents to regularly monitor whether their children are becoming involved in drugs or online gambling. He emphasized that families, educational institutions and society as a whole must work together to guide the younger generation towards a responsible and productive future. The meeting was organized by Baraigram Police Station and presided over by Shovon Chandra Hor, Additional Superintendent of Police, Baraigram Circle.

Among others, OC of Baraigram Police Station Md. Shafiqul Islam, President of the Upazila Policing Committee Alhaj Principal Md. Lutfar Rahman, freedom fighter Sardar Boyete Reza, and President of Baraigram Smart Press Club Alhaj Md. Saifur Rahman also addressed the meeting.
