Polythene ban , plantation programme at DU

With the slogan 'Protection of Sustainable Environment and Biodiversity in a Non-Discrimination Environment in the Mind of Harmony', the programme of "Polythene and SUP Ban and Tree Plantation and Nature Painting" were held at Dhaka University on Monday.

On this occasion, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, inaugurated the tree plantation program in the square adjacent to the administrative building. Then the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University. Niaz Ahmad Khan, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof. Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) Prof. Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha and Treasurer Prof Dr. Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury planted one tree sapling separately.

Later, a discussion meeting was held with Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Dr Niaz Ahmad Khan in the chair at Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate building

Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Syeda Rizwana Hasan was present as the chief guest in the discussion meeting. Prof. Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) in the event. Mamun Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha, Treasurer Prof. Dr. Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and Chief Forest Conservator of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Amir Hossain Chowdhury spoke as a special guest. Dhaka University Department of Botany Prof Dr. Mohammad Jasim Uddin and Professor of Chemistry were present.

Md. Ahsan Habib presented thematic essays. Principal of Salimullah Muslim Hall and Abdullah-al-Mamun conducted the ceremony.

Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Syeda Rizwana Hasan said that the temperature of the country is increasing day by day due to the adverse effects of climate change. The highest temperature has been recorded in the country this year. An exceptional flood has occurred in Noakhali and Feni.

If global carbon emissions are not curbed, there is a danger that between 2050 and 2075, one third of Bangladesh's territory will sink deep into the sea. He emphasized on stopping indiscriminate deforestation and conservation of natural forests and said that the law will be reformed if necessary. He said the law was enacted in 2002 to ban polythene. But this law was not properly implemented. Pointing out that this law will be effectively implemented to stop the production, marketing and use of plastic and polythene, he emphasized on creating public awareness in this regard. He called on the students of Dhaka University to play a leading role in this regard.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan said that everyone should fulfill their responsibility to protect the environment.

To create a pollution-free environment, he emphasized on dynamizing the activities of the environment clubs of different halls of Dhaka University. He expressed hope that students will play a leading role in environmental conservation and social development by strengthening various activities including nature painting.

Besides, a nature painting competition was held at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building with the participation of the students of Dhaka University Fine Arts Faculty. On the eve of the discussion, the guests visited the nature painting programme.
