A case has been filed against the mother of a 14-day-old newborn baby who was killed by throwing it into a plastic drum used to store rainwater in Begumganj, Noakhali.

On Tuesday , the father of the child who died in the incident, Sourav Hossain, filed a murder case with Begumganj Police Station. The only accused in the case is the mother of the deceased, Fatema Begum (19). Earlier, the incident took place on Monday evening in Sourav's house in a market house adjacent to Majumdarhat in Ward No. 4 of Mirwarishpur Union of the upazila. Later, the body of the child was recovered from a rainwater storage drum kept in the house around 10 pm on the same day.

The deceased newborn is the son of Sourav Hossain of the same house. Arrested Fatema Begum is the daughter of Sharif Ulya of Narottampur Union in Begumganj.

Locals said that Fatema married Sourav in November 2025 after a love affair. Since then, there had been a dispute in their marital life. When the newborn went missing on Monday evening, family members questioned Fatema. At first, she claimed that someone had hit her on the head from behind and taken the child. Later, she said that someone had taken her on a donkey. This made the family members suspicious. Later, during a search, the body of the newborn was recovered from a plastic drum used to store rainwater in the house at around 10 pm.

Police said that during interrogation, Fatema confessed to killing her child by throwing it into a drum of water. The newborn was irritable, couldn't sleep, cried excessively, and wouldn't let her mother sleep, so she killed him after finding him in a plastic drum.

Begumganj Police Station OC ) Md. Shamsuzzaman said the mother was taken into police custody immediately after the incident on charges of killing the newborn by throwing him into the water. After investigating the incident, a case was registeredregistered.
