The historic National Revolution and Solidarity Day was observed with reverence and patriotic zeal in Shailkupa on Thursday.
The day commemorates the momentous events of November 7, 1975, when the sepoy-people's revolution drastically altered the course of the nation's politics, providing a new direction for the country and its people.
Following the tragic assassination of national leaders on August 15 and November 3, 1975, then Deputy Chief of Army Staff Brigadier General Khaled Mosharraf detained Major General Ziaur Rahman in Dhaka Cantonment through a coup. Declaring himself as the army chief, Khaled arrested then-President Khandaker Moshtaq Ahmed on November 6, dissolving the cabinet and parliament, and installing Chief Justice Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem as the President.
However, the night saw a unified resistance from ordinary soldiers, spontaneously supported by the general public, leading to Ziaur Rahman's release. On the morning of November 7, Khaled Mosharraf and several of his followers lost their lives in the ensuing clashes. This unprecedented solidarity reshaped the nation's political landscape, positioning Zia at the center of power.
Political analysts assert that this shift under Ziaur Rahman's leadership fortified the country's independence and sovereignty, liberating democracy and paving the way for progress. From this day, the journey of multi-party democracy began, marking a significant milestone in the nation's history.
