Prominent writer and researcher Faham Abdus Salam congratulated his father-in-law, former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, following his election as President, describing him as a responsible figure who prioritizes others above himself.
Faham shared his long-standing personal impressions in a detailed social media post, reflecting on two decades of knowing Mirza Fakhrul. He likened Mirza Fakhrul's nature to that of a devoted eldest sibling in a traditional Bangladeshi family, who takes on heavy burdens to care for everyone around him.
Recalling a past conversation in Singapore, Faham shared that Mirza Fakhrul expressed deep personal satisfaction over securing the release of party chief Khaleda Zia and looking forward to democratic progress. Faham observed that Mirza Fakhrul treated his political duties with immense personal devotion, often placing national and organizational interests before his own.
Writing about Mirza Fakhrul's role in politics, Faham noted that many young activists viewed him as a unifying national figure because he consistently prioritized the country above partisan interests. He acknowledged that while practicing high-level democracy remains challenging under current social realities, Mirza Fakhrul spent his career steadily pushing for democratic principles.
Addressing the transition, Faham expressed mixed feelings, stating that while the presidency appoints a widely respected guardian for the nation, his departure from active party leadership leaves a significant gap in the BNP. He concluded by noting that Mirza Fakhrul's non-factional approach and moderate political style have earned him broad respect across the political spectrum.
