Maria’s family in Betagi moves from polythene shed to new house

Life sometimes confronts people with a harsh reality where mere survival becomes a grueling, unending struggle. For a long time, fourth-grader Maria, her mother, and her grandmother were forced to live under a dilapidated shack made of polythene sheets and frail bamboo poles in Chor Chopkhali village under Hosnabad union of Barguna’s Betagi upazila.
During the rainy season, water poured through the torn roof, while in winter, cold winds left them shivering. Hunger, uncertainty, and extreme helplessness were their daily companions. Today, those painful days are a thing of the past. Ending their long period of hardship, the family now lives in a secure and dignified two-story house, opening a hopeful new chapter in their lives.
Without any male earning member in the family, securing two meals a day was a constant struggle, making the dream of a permanent shelter seem virtually impossible. Despite these extreme adversities, little Maria pursued her education at a local primary school with unwavering determination. However, even a light storm or rain caused sleepless nights over fears that their makeshift tent would blow away. Her books and notebooks were frequently ruined by rainwater, yet she never lost her resolve.
The family's heartbreaking plight first drew the attention of local journalist and founder of the humanitarian organization HopeCare, Ln Md. Samim Sikder. He immediately initiated a campaign to build a permanent home for Maria's family, raising funds through HopeCare. Moved by the initiative, several generous individuals, philanthropists, and institutions stepped forward with financial support. Their collective efforts eventually transformed the fragile shelter into an attractive two-story tin-roofed house.
Reflecting on the initiative, Ln. Md. Samim Sikder said: "When I first saw the heart-wrenching condition of Maria and her family, my conscience as a journalist and a human being was deeply shaken. I immediately formed a fund through HopeCare. Seeing the smile on their faces today and knowing that little Maria can now study safely is the greatest fulfillment of my journalism career. It is our duty to stand beside underprivileged and suffering people."
Stepping into the new home, an emotional Maria wiped tears of joy and shared her feelings: "Earlier, whenever clouds gathered or rain fell, our home would flood, and my books would get ruined. I felt helpless and couldn't study properly. Now, we live comfortably and safely in this two-story home. Samim Bhaiyya has completely changed our lives. I want to study hard and serve society when I grow up."
Expressing deep gratitude, Maria’s mother, Sarmin Begum, said: "Without the mercy of Almighty Allah and the love of these kind-hearted people, this dream would never have come true. For a family that struggled to afford food, having a two-story home was beyond imagination. Now, my daughter can go to school and study without fear. As a mother, nothing brings me greater peace."
Maria's elderly grandmother added through tearful eyes that sleeping peacefully in a proper home at the end of her life was a profound blessing and comfort before she passes away.
Praises flowed from the local community as well. Md. Shahin, a local prominent figure, noted that this initiative by HopeCare and Ln. Md. Samim Sikder serves as an inspiring example for society. He highlighted that if wealthy individuals and youth come together to support the vulnerable, no family will remain homeless.
Betagi UNO Muh. Saddam Hossain expressed satisfaction over the outcome, stating: "After learning about Maria’s family living under a polythene shed, I personally got involved from the administration to support this humane cause. The construction of this home through HopeCare and public support is truly inspiring. Along with government efforts, everyone must unite to ensure basic human rights for all."
The transformation from a polythene shed to a sturdy duplex house has not only improved the living standard of Maria's family, but it also serves as a strong reminder that sincere empathy and goodwill can permanently change human destiny.
