A Narayanganj court has sentenced Hira Chowdhury (33) to death for the murder of his wife, Tanzida Akter Popy. The verdict was delivered on Monday by Judge Abu Shamim Azad of the Narayanganj District and Sessions Court in the presence of the accused.
Hira Chowdhury, the son of Omar Chowdhury Tuhin, is a resident of Purbo Lamapara in Fatullah. The victim, Tanzida Akter Popy, was the daughter of the late Ali Ashraf from Rajapur in Boktaboli, Fatullah. The couple had been married with the consent of both families.
Inspector Md. Kaiyum Khan of the court police confirmed the ruling, stating that the murder case was filed at Fatullah Police Station on May 26, 2021. Hira Chowdhury confessed to the crime during court proceedings.
Public Prosecutor Adv Abul Kalam Azad Zakir shared additional details, explaining that the marriage was agreed upon by both families. However, after the wedding, Popy faced repeated demands for money from her in-laws under various pretexts. To ensure her daughter’s happiness, Popy’s mother, Taslima Begum, tried to meet these demands, even selling land to provide financial support.
The day before the murder, Popy’s mother had given BDT 50,000 to her in-laws. The next day, she received a call informing her that Popy was at Victoria General Hospital. Upon arrival, she learned that her daughter had been killed by her husband, who slit her throat.
Following the incident, Popy’s younger brother, Md. Shakil, filed a case against Hira Chowdhury. After the trial, the court delivered the death sentence.
