Goats with houses distributed among tobacco farmers in Manikchhari
Alamgir Hossain, Manikchhari (Khagrachari)
Goats with houses and materials have been distributed to tobacco farmers on the banks of Halda in Manikchhari Upazila of Khagrachari, upstream of the country's only natural fish breeding ground (cotton), with the aim of creating alternative employment opportunities on Tuesday.
Two goats, one goat, food and medicine were distributed to each person as materials in the 'Halda River Natural Fish Breeding Ground Development and Management Project (2nd Phase)' organized by the Chief Guest Project Director Md. Mizanur Rahman among 11 tobacco farmers in the Upazila Parishad premises.
At this time, District Fisheries Officer Dr. Raju Ahmed, UNO Tahmina Afroz Bhuiyan, Upazila Fisheries Officer Md. Mahmudul Hasan, Upazila Agriculture Officer Zahir Raihan and Upazila Statistics Officer Rakesh Biswas.
The speakers said, 'The Halda River is a priceless resource of the country. The Halda River plays a huge role in the country's fish production. In the upstream Manikchhari section of Halda, the water of the river is constantly being polluted due to the cultivation of poisonous tobacco on both banks of the river. As a result, the natural reproduction of fish is being disrupted in the main part of Halda. To protect the biodiversity of the river, fish life and the environment of Halda, tobacco farmers should come forward to cultivate alternative tobacco on the banks of Halda.' The speakers assured them of all kinds of cooperation in this regard.
