Former MP Nur Mohammad Mandal sent to jail in ACC case

Rangpur Bureau

The court has sent former MP and former Upazila Chairman of Pirganj Upazila in Rangpur Nur Mohammad Mandal to jail in a case filed by ACC.

When he appeared in court onThursday and applied for bail, the court rejected his bail application and ordered him to be sent to jai. Judge Fazle Khoda Mohammad Nazir of the Rangpur Senior Special Judge's Court issued this order on Thursday afternoon.

He  is the advisor of Pirganj Upazila Awami League and a former MP of that constituency and a former Upazila Chairman.

Nur Mohammad Mandal achieved these achievements by being elected MP twice and Upazila Chairman three times in his political life by being involved with BNP, Jatiya Party and Awami League. He also became the owner of immense wealth.

The soft-spoken and friendly leader often changed parties at convenient times, and the people of the area jokingly called him a tumbling leader.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed this case against Nur Mohammad Mondal in 2020 on charges of concealing information about his assets and acquiring assets beyond known income. Earlier, on March 9 of this year, the court ordered the freezing of 8 bank accounts of Nur Mohammad Mondal, his entertainment center "Ananda Nagar" in Pirganj, and 3,130.73 acres of land and immovable and movable assets worth an estimated Tk 9 crore in the case of illegal acquisition of assets.

On behalf of the ACC, Rubel Hossain, Deputy Director and Investigation Officer of the Rangpur Integrated Office, filed this case and applied for the seizure of assets. ACC lawyer AKM Harun Ur Rashid confirmed the matter.
It is worth mentioning that Nur Mohammad Mandal was elected as the first MP from the Pirganj constituency in the 1996 parliamentary election, defeating Abdul Wahed Kanu Miah, the brother-in-law of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, with the nomination of the Jatiya Party. Then in 2001, he was elected as the MP for the second time, defeating Awami League President Sheikh Hasina from the same constituency. In the 2008 election, he left the Jatiya Party and contested from the same constituency with the nomination of BNP and was defeated by Awami League President Sheikh Hasina. In the 2014 upazila election, he defeated AKM Chhayadat Hossain Bakul, the son of Sheikh Hasina's brother-in-law, and was elected as the Pirganj Upazila Chairman. In the 2018 election, he left the BNP and joined the Awami League and was elected as the Upazila Chairman for the second time with the boat symbol. In the 2024 election, Nur Mohammad Mandal was elected as the Upazila Chairman for the third time with the boat symbol of the Awami League.

When Sheikh Hasina fled during the mass uprising of students and the public on August 5, 2025, he  went into hiding. At that time, several cases were filed against him on charges of providing financial support to Awami League leaders and activists to suppress the anti-discrimination student movement.
